Conversations at the Crossroads.

Confronting Your Risk Aversion

Last week I had the opportunity to speak to a group of entrepreneurs, freelancers and other professionals on techniques for confronting risk aversion. This is a topic that comes up in nearly every conversation about change–whether professional or personal–and I enjoyed sharing some of the approaches that have proven useful to my clients.

An excerpt of the talk (about 18 minutes) can be found here. If you have worked with me, you may recognize some of these:

  • Worst Case Scenario (around 01:30)
  • Balancing the Scale (around 04:40)
  • The Pain/Gain Model (around 06:30)
  • The Reframe Game (around 08:45)

These are also approaches about which I have written on my blog.

Our ability to make thoughtful decisions and move forward towards our goals often hinges upon how we think about and react to the sensation of risk. As you listen, consider the paths laid out before you that seem “risky” and reflect on what’s been holding you back. Then see what new insights you have in applying these techniques.

Perhaps you’ll find yourself taking a step you never thought you’d take.

With support and encouragement for your journey,
